Chemical Application Technique

Step One

First, open sprayer by turning handle (while in down position) to the left as far as it will go. Second, lift pump out of sprayer. Third, pour a measured quart of concentrated chemical, we use Abstraction VLM or CLean-N-Vac PBX, into the sprayer. Fourth, fill with water allowing room for pump to be inserted. Fifth place pump into sprayer. Sixth, turn handle to left (Be sure three prong handle locks) Locks to the right. Seventh, turn until tight. Eighth, pump up sprayer and you are ready to apply chemical to carpet.

Step Two

Spray chemical in about a 5-foot side to side pattern, overlapping as you go. Spraying the chemical on evenly will translate into a quicker cleaning time. When you see heavy spots of grease or black stains, or yellow or brownish pet

stains, simply spray spots more heavily with the chemical. If while cleaning, the spot or stain didn't appear to come out, respray spot if necessary and clean again.

It is advantages to spray ahead a ways, and let the chemical dwell, so spray a large area and start in the cleanest area working to the dirtiest thus allowing the most dwell time on the dirty carpet.

Step Three

It's always best if you release pressure in sprayer when job is completed.

Pad Use and Care

A. These 20" cotton pads are made of high quality absorbent cotton terry cloth. They should last for about 80-100 cleanings and uses per pad.

B. Do not over work pads during cleaning--change pads under the machine often, this will remove more soil at a faster rate and make the pads last longer. They can only hold so much soil and using them longer will wear them out prematurely.

C. To launder pads, put twice as much laundry detergent in as is suggested, plus 1/3 cup BIZ or generic powdered color safe bleach. Run washer through full cycle. Then restart washer and add only 1 1/2 cups liquid bleach in and run through complete cycle again. Note: do not put bleach directly on pads, wait till washer is full of water or put it in bleach dispenser of machine.

D. When pads are done in washer, shake them out and lay flat in stack, then roll stack of 15-20 in half and place in bucket. If you will be using them in a couple of days do not bother drying them, as that reduces pad life, BUT; if you are not going to be using them soon then dry them so they will not rot and fall apart.

Note: If water is very hard then add 1/2 cup of cascade dishwashing soap or procyon to washer load. This will aid in brightening the pads and getting them clean.

Glider Selection

A. The system comes with three different thicknesses of glider discs. 2 thin-, 1 medium, and 1 thick 1 that is smaller around and a Swiss cheese glider.

B. Most commercial carpets and berbers require NO GLIDER or maybe just the swiss cheese glider, the thin gliders are used for kitchens, offices, stores, any low cut or looped carpets.

C. The medium glider is for most carpet found in homes, shags, plushes, sculptures, frazees, etc.

D. Thick glider is for when there is a thick and deep pad that is not very dense, you can feel the machine having difficulty running because the brush is too deep into the carpet. Usually this type of situation and padding is found in mobile homes or in the lower priced housing districts.

E. Note whenever the machine is too difficult to move freely over the carpet; change to one thickness thicker glider.

Standard Operating Procedure

Entering home or business:

When entering your customer's establishment it is advisable to either measure up the square footage and give your customer an accurate estimate of what the job is going to cost him or her. By staying to your estimate price you will build a reputation for honesty with your customers.

To measure square footage: multiply the length of the room times the width and then times the number of cents per square foot that you wish to charge. (Usually 25-35cents for homes and 20-30 for commercial).

To figure traffic just measure the areas you are going to clean and add up the total times the price per foot

Bring in the equipment:

Once you and your customer have agreed to the cost of the cleaning it is time to bring in the equipment and do the cleaning. If using Abstraction VLM put 9 ounces of concentrated chemical in your 3 gallon sprayer and fill with water-- this will give you three gallons of cleaning chemical. Also select a glider you will need to do the job. Take in a stack of pads and a bucket for making pads wet. The easiest way to accommodate this process is to use one five-gallon bucket for the sprayer and glider, and one for the pads (15-20). Also a gallon of water can be added to the pads at this time, thus eliminating the need of bothering the customer for water. Now carry the sprayer, glider, pads, and vacuum and floor machine into the establishment that you will be cleaning.

Setting up to get started cleaning:

Once your equipment is in, move the furniture from around outer perimeter of room to the center of the room, making sure not to trip over light cords, or pulling furniture with (lights, or clocks or radios, etc.) away from wall without unplugging electrical cords.

Now unwrap the cord on your floor machine and (if in a home) plug into any outlet. NOW spray chemical as described in Chemical Application Technique.

Note: When cleaning where the furniture sets, it is wise to NOT spray "unless soiled" where the actual legs set. That way there is almost nil chance of ever haviing a furniture stain transfer to the carpet.

Put glider on carpet where you have sprayed.

Squeeze out one cotton pad to "just damp".

Center pad on glider disc.

Place machine on pad (centered).

Machine is now ready to operate.Depress the on switch.

When cleaning move back and forth in a 3 feet to 4 feet motion, overlapping each pass until carpet is clean, change pads frequently and never let machine run on carpet without it moving back and forth, as this could damage the carpet fibres.

* If the carpet is a california berber or a Frieze type nylon carpet use the synthetic Encapsupads instead of the 100% cotton pads as they are slippery and will not cause any tipblooming or flaring of the carpet fibers.

When cleaning next to the wall your last pass should be with you guiding the machine to the right, right next to the wall. By going left to right, this will clean all the lint, etc. away from the wall edge and will make your vacuuming job easier.

Vacuum carpet and replace furniture. Making sure all plugs are plugged into their outlets. Note; If the furniture is RED mahogany or RED cherry, place a small piece of tin foil under the leg of the furniture to avoid staining of the carpets. These wood stain colors are the only one that will bleed into the carpets.

With furniture replaced to outer perimeter of room now you can spray and clean the center of the room following the aforesaid procedure.

When you come across deep heavy stains. Spray more chemical on spot and clean as usual buts if stain does not completely come out, move machine in a circle so that the pad wipes this spot from all sides.

Continue doing the same process to all rooms until you are finished. Bring equipment to truck and bring back in the bill to a pleased customer. Make sure you always wipe the floors next to carpet that you just cleaned, there may be lint or sand that kicks out from the carpet you cleaned. Look over your job and accept your pay. Then hand the customer a few of your cards and ask them if they would mind telling their friends and family about your cleaning service, tell them it was a pleasure serving them and be on your way to the next job.

Problem Areas

Blood, Ink, Coffee, Coke, Heavy Grease, Paint:

On these kinds of stains it is often advantages to saturate the spot and then set a dry pad on the spot and stand on it, thus enabling the bulk of the spot to come up without it smearing into the carpet as you are cleaning. This is only necessary on excessive spills, otherwise saturate and clean as usual.

Product Choices: Clean-N-Vac P.O.G. for Paint, Grease, Oil

For Blood: Use 1 Cup 20% Hydrogen Peroxide and 1 cup water with 1 ounce Oxygen bleach, mix and apply to blood stains. Clean as usual.

For Ink: Clean-N-Vac Cyclone

Any Abstraction or Clean-N-Vac Cleaner for Coke or Coffee.

Pet Stains:

If there are heavy pet stains, spray stain heavily and go over it with a very wet pad and then go back over it with a very dry pad until the spot is removed. Again be sure never to run machine on carpet without moving it back and forth as you are cleaning. Abstraction UR Out is incredible at getting out the stains from pets, and because it kills bacteria it often kills the smell as well.

If encapsulating, then Clean-N-Vac WHAMM is used on pet stains, and if the urine deposits are severe, then use WITH Clean-N-Vac PeeRadicator

Fat & Grease:

When cleaning a restaurant that has a lot of fat and grease in the carpet dampen your pads in a bucket of "hot" water. This will aid in the breaking up of the grease and fat. Also Abstraction TLC added to for a booster will help cut the grease quickly.

Carpet Edge.

When cleaning on a carpet edge where the carpet ends and the vinyl or tile begins, run pad over the edge from right to left so as to not roll pad up under the brush, also, if really dirty, do bottom side of metal edge by hand

If there are heavy Soil Filtration Lines, then use Clean-N-Vac Cyclone to remove them.

When carpet is very dirty and full of sand, sawdust, drywall dust, grit, or lint, dust, dog hair, etc.: vacuum thoroughly before cleaning. Failure to do so could cause you to vacuum afterward and have the carpet turn dark from the deep embedded materials in carpet. If embedded material will not vacuum up then go over area with the machine to break up the embedded material and then vacuum thoroughly, then clean as usual.

Running with out a glider:

Sometimes on commercial carpets the carpet fibres are hard and stiff and cleaning in the traffic areas seems to be going awfully slow. You can in these instances, speed up the cleaning process by running your machine and pad without a glider.

Soap & Shampoo

On some jobs the traffic lanes may appear to be uncommonly black, this is often caused by there being too much soap or shampoo left in the carpet by the previous cleaner. One of two ways will clean the carpet. The first way is to clean the carpet with a pad that is washer-dry, simply stated a pad that is spin cycle dry. If the darkness or grayness remains in the carpet then slop on a wet pad and dry it up with a completely dry pad.

Carpet that has soap or shampoo in it will "white cap" as you clean (white suds will show on the tips of the carpet fibres) plus there will be some suds or bubbles on the bottom of the glider. If the soap problem is extreme, slop on a wet pad and push your glider flatly and firmly into the carpet and the foam will come up on the glider, just wipe in on a dirty pad and then dry up area with dry pads.

If you are cleaning a lightly foamy or shampoo filled carpet, then use Clean-N-Vac PBX which not only cleans the carpet but will encapsulate the shampoo left in the carpet and allow it to be removed upon vacuuming.

Rust Stains:

For rust stain we recommend using "Clean-N-Vac Rust Assassin". Follow directions and precautions on label.

Graphite under doors:

Some doors leave a graphite or grease stain by the hinge side bottom of the door, as the machine will not get in that part of the comer simply spray the stain, let it sit while cleaning the rooms then take stain out by hand wiping it with center of a used pad.

Clean-N-Vac Cyclone will also make quick work of this type stain.

Food Dye Stains: Clean-N-Vac Red Vanish will remove most any food dye stains, be it Koolaid, or dye from vomit or medicine etc.

Often you'll be working around desks in offices. Usually you can get to all the traffic areas and do it without moving the desks. But it always looks best if you spray and hand wipe the areas under the desks so all the carpet has that "just cleaned" appearance.

Note: Always keep in mind that the first time you clean a carpet will be the slowest. The next time you clean it the dirt will release easier and faster because of the working of the chemical. A small restuarant that took eight hours the first time now cleans in two hours.

Mildew and Musty Carpets:

For mildew spots or musty carpets spray heavy and let set for a while... then use the wet and dry up method. Once clean the smell should be gone.

Discoloration of Carpet:

Each color of carpet has discoloration stains that will be consistent: Examples:

Color of Carpet Color or permanent stain

Green Bronze

Brown Green

Orange Yellow

Blue Yellowish

Yellow Orangish

Tan Yellow-bronze

Of course there are other colors for permanent stains but these are the norm. When you see these colors in carpets you can tell the customer up front that these stains will probably not come out.

As with any thing in this world, experience is the best teacher, this manual will give you the technical support needed to clean carpets successfully and with confidence. But, to find the (Balance) in carpet cleaning only experience can teach you that. Balance is when you get to the point when you can clean the carpet thoroughly and on a timely basis. Normal tendency is to work extra long on bad areas. Often much longer then necessary, but you also have to be sure you have gotten the carpet clean.

Always Remember: You are going to clean carpets and do the best you can on carpet that are in the state THEY (the customer) put them in. You can out clean anyone but you can not make abused, and damaged carpet new again. For that they would have to pay by the yard.

Do your BEST!! You will succeed!!
